From the bar stool to the boat slip

The whole place sits on one stretch of Long Lake shoreline. Walk it the way a first-time guest does.

Pull up a stool under the beams and Long Lake fills the windows behind the taps. The bar is open every day from 11 in the morning until 2 at night, all year, and one Birchwood regular still talks about the Bloody Mary.

The dining room is where the pizzas land: 12 or 16 inch, homemade, with an arcade corner for the kids while the wings come off the smoker. Families, couples and a table of old friends all fit.

Out front the patio runs down toward the shoreline. In fall the tree over the tables turns gold. As one reviewer put it: it's about the food and view.

Appetizers, crisp salads, juicy burgers, big sandwiches and the pizzas the place is known for. Ask about specials: the kitchen is always experimenting and loves throwing meats and cheeses on the smoker.

Long Lake runs 99 miles of shoreline through bays and inlets, with depths to 70 feet. Walleye trollers, worm-and-bobber sunfish families and first-time ice fishermen all end up on the same water.
